BROOF(t4) is a fire performance classification used in the UK and Europe to assess how roofing systems react to external fire exposure. It is defined within BS EN 13501-5:2016, the European standard for classifying roof coverings according to their external fire performance.
In simple terms, this rating confirms that a roofing system has been tested to demonstrate strong resistance to fire spread when exposed to flames and heat from outside sources, such as nearby fires or burning debris.
The t4 test method evaluates the performance of a complete roofing system under external fire conditions. Unlike testing a single material in isolation, the assessment considers the full roof build-up as it would be installed in real-life construction.
The test assesses:
🔥 External flame spread across the roof surface
🔥 Fire penetration through the roofing system
🔥 Production of burning droplets or debris
🔥 Overall behaviour under external fire exposure
This provides a realistic indication of how the roof system performs in practical scenarios.
The “B” in BROOF(t4) indicates a high level of performance in resisting external fire spread. A system achieving this classification has demonstrated that it:
🔥Limits flame spread across the roof surface
🔥Helps prevent fire from penetrating through the roof build-up
🔥Performs safely under defined external fire test conditions
This classification is widely recognised for demonstrating suitable fire performance for many UK roofing applications.
For architects, contractors and specifiers, a BROOF(t4) classification provides confidence that the roofing system has been independently tested to a recognised European and UK standard.
For Castleflex EPDM rubber balcony and flat roof tiles, this means:
✔ Suitable for use where external fire performance is required
✔ Supports compliance with UK building regulations relating to roof fire safety
✔ Helps reduce the risk of flame spread on balconies, terraces and flat roofs
✔ Provides reassurance to specifiers, building owners and project teams
Fire classifications apply to the specific tested roof system configuration, including substrate, insulation and installation method. The installed system should match the tested specification to ensure equivalent performance. Castlefex EPDM tiles were tested on their own in the assumption that they would be added on top of an already complaint BroofT4 roof build-up. Full test report available upon request.
